Hop on Your Bike - May is Bike Month!
Join us in celebrating by attending one of our sponsored events
Bike Month is the largest community organized event in San Luis Obispo County. There are over fifty events happening countywide throughout the month of May. Bicycles are the ultimate clean air, zero emissions vehicle—practical, economical, low-maintenance and non-polluting. Not to mention, they are fun to ride and a great way to exercise!
Throughout the Month of May, Farmers’ Market Bike Valets
Ride your bike to one of your local Farmers’ Markets and not only will you be reducing the amount of miles your food has to travel to get to your plate, but we will park your bike for you while you shop! Ride your bike to any of the following farmers’ markets this May and park your bike at the free bike valet, courtesy of the SLO County APCD!

May 6, Bike to School Day
Join our Clean Air Ambassadors at one of the many schools throughout the county as they greet and cheer on students that bike and walk to school. Bike to School Day is a national celebration to encourage students and parents to try bicycling as a healthy and safe alternative to driving to school.
May 31, Bike to the Ball Park
Bicycle over to the ball park and park your bike in the Bike Valet! The first 100 that show their bike valet ticket get FREE admission to the SLO Blues Baseball Game, courtesy of the SLO County APCD! APCD has also teamed up with the SLO Blues on a Double-Play Teddy Bear Sponsorship. For every double-play this season, two teddy bears, complete with an APCD pencil flag, will be donated to the Sierra Vista Hospital Emergency Room.

The annual event held every October features events and activities at rail related locations throughout San Luis Obispo and Northern Santa Barbara Counties.

3. Wine Rail Excursions
Presented by the Central Coast Railroad Festival
Wine Rail Excursions feature a ride on Amtrak’s Coast Starlight up or down the famous and scenic Cuesta Grade between Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo. Trips include complimentary wine tasting at rail related wineries such as Templetons Pomar Junction, a light lunch, rail history and a private bus trip in the opposite direction of the train trip. Starting city alternates between Paso Robles and SLO.

4. National Train Day 2013
National Train Day 2013
Over 13,000 came out to see the Los Angeles National Train Day on May 11, 2013, where they could check out great model train displays, speakers, vendors from all over the nation and more! SLO Car Free partnered this year with California State Parks- Hearst Castle and the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce to host a booth, showing people all of the great things SLO County has to offer. 5. Green Shorts Film Festival
Green Shorts Film Festival 2012
The SLO County Air Pollution Control District, was happy to team up with the Central Coast Clean Cities Coalition and Mr. Eco (The Environmental Rap Superhero) on this year’s inaugural SLO Green Shorts Film Festival. On March 11, 2012, we attended the Green Film screening and were awarded 1st Place for our music video titled “When We Commute,” an original music video that promotes clean commuting options and alternative fueled vehicles.
Our next stop for our video was the Santa Barbara Green Shorts Film Festival on April 6, where we were awarded with the Traffic Solutions award (for a video that focused its message on sustainable transportation) and Third Place Overall!

6. California Sustainable Tourism Summit
Sustainable Tourism Summit at Lake Tahoe
SLO Car Free attended the 2nd Annual California Sustainable Tourism Summit in October. We partnered with the Santa Barbara and Napa Car Free programs to spread the word about the “California Car Free Movement.” The summit was held this year at the Ritz Carlton Highlands in Lake Tahoe and featured speakers such as Jim Moriarty, CEO and President of the Surfrider Foundation, Caroline Beteta with the California Travel & Tourism Commission, Roy Deitchman with Amtrak, Brett Rohring with the Walt Disney Corporation and more!

SLO Car Free celebrates the 2010 National Train Day at Union Station in Los Angeles!
Thousands showed up at the Union Station to join in on the celebration. Attendees were able to see old model trains, various educational booths and of course, SLO Car Free! SLO Car Free, the SLO County Air Pollution Control District and the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce hosted a booth dedicated to showing people all of the pleasures San Luis Obispo has to offer.

On November 19, 2009, at the San Luis Obispo Regional Airport Hangar, SLO Car Free had a celebratory event allowing the public to get a behind-the-scenes look at an aircraft hangar that displayed the San Luis Obispo Car Free program, its members and the services they provide. Chairman of the APCD Board, Supervisor Katcho Achadjian, led the ribbon cutting ceremony. The launch party also featured live music provided by the band Impromptu, delicious cake and fun drawing prizes for those that were in attendance! Photography by Weston Neuschafer Photography.
