Planes and Our Earth

Air travel is a convenient and often necessary way to travel, especially for vacations. However, did you know that airplanes release greenhouse gases in the stratosphere, where they can do proportionately more harm than cars for short trips? The aviation industry is working to cut back on greenhouse gas emissions from planes, increase fuel efficiency and airports are increasing the electrification of ground support equipment.

On a local level, out at the San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport, efforts are underway to promote the use of alternative energy to help reduce carbon footprints. In addition to the solar electricity system currently operational at a commercial corporate hangar facility, preliminary plans for new lease site development also call for the inclusion of solar electricity.

While traveling by plane contributes to climate change, there are ways that you can minimize your impact:

  • Purchase carbon credits to offset the emissions. The Environmental Defense Fund has created a Carbon Offset List of reputable providers including:
  • If you have a choice between types of airplanes, research their emissions.
  • If you must travel by plane, make the choice to travel car free once you arrive!
